Joana Manzano has always been fascinated by the world of networking. From a young age, her early experiences with the internet transformed her life, igniting a passion for a career in technology. Inspired by curiosity and connectivity, today Manzano designs and implements complex network and security solutions to solve critical technical and business challenges.

“We live in a hyper-connected world,” said Manzano, Principal for Kyndryl Consult in Spain and Portugal. “As a network architect, I enjoy helping to drive this connectivity forward with strong solutions and innovative approaches.”

Organizations count on Manzano to help transform and modernize their entire communications ecosystem. To do so effectively, she stresses the importance of innovation in developing technologies and solutions that enhance efficiency, security and scalability.

“Innovation is about creating solutions that solve real problems in new and efficient ways,” said Manzano. “It’s about pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo to drive meaningful progress and make a tangible impact. In my work, it means being proactive, thinking ahead and constantly evolving to stay at the forefront of technology.”

Here, Manzano reflects on her remarkable journey to becoming a principal and shares some secrets to her success.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Earning the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certification, a prestigious recognition in networking, was a major milestone for me. With fewer than 60,000 active CCIEs worldwide, it was a nod to my years of hard work, resilience and dedication to deep technical excellence. It wasn’t just a professional milestone but a personal achievement that shaped how I approach challenges and continuous learning.

What current business issue are you addressing?

I’m leading the architectural strategy of a global network transformation program for a major financial customer. The initiative aims to simplify, modernize and evolve their entire communications ecosystem. It spans multiple domains, involves coordination across diverse teams and requires strong collaboration with key partners and providers. From a technical perspective, the program is already delivering tangible benefits — increased visibility, simplification and improved operational efficiency. It’s a strategic journey, and I’m proud to contribute with a clear architectural vision that drives transformation at scale, working closely with all stakeholders toward sustainable success.

Say ‘yes’ to challenges. Life’s more fun when you jump into the deep end — even if it scares you. That’s where real growth happens, and often, where the best stories begin.

How have you found a sense of belonging at Kyndryl?

I’ve found a sense of belonging at Kyndryl through a culture that values collaboration, trust and mutual support. Beyond my role as a Network Architect, I actively lead and engage in cross-functional initiatives  — both within and beyond the technical space — which helps me stay connected, foster community and bring others along on that journey.

Mentorship has played a key role. When I first joined Kyndryl, my manager’s vision for my growth and his unwavering support and trust made all the difference. Today, it gives me joy to pay it forward, building strong relationships that have supported my professional development. That support and shared purpose have been essential in my journey to becoming a principal.
