Kyndryl’s journey to becoming an employer of choice

By Maryjo Charbonnier, Chief Human Resources Officer at Kyndryl

Kyndryl’s recent Wall Street Journal recognition as one of America’s Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces® is just the latest in an extraordinary string of accolades since our launch as an independent firm in 2021. What makes some of the best in the business want to become Kyndryls? Our culture — The Kyndryl Way.

Kyndryl’s business is service. We co-create, design, build and run the IT systems that power the world’s critical public and private entities. Governments, banks, manufacturers, health care systems and more count on Kyndryl to serve their citizens and customers. And the restlessness, curiosity, experience and expertise of our people make Kyndryl unmatched in services delivery.

Here, Kyndryl’s Chief Human Resources Officer Maryjo Charbonnier shares insights into Kyndryl’s people-first strategy and our journey to becoming the employer of choice for the world’s top talent.

What defines Kyndryl’s workplace culture?

Maryjo: Our culture — called The Kyndryl Way — is at the heart of how we work. When we became an independent company in 2021, we put culture at the center of our transformation from a product-centric organization to a people-centric one. Shaped by leaders and Kyndryls around the world, The Kyndryl Way defines the behaviors we expect when Kyndryls interact with each other, with customers, and in the communities where we live and work.

The Kyndryl Way has six core values — restless, empathetic, devoted to shared success, flat, fast and focused. I like that these are unique; these aren’t the typical words you see hanging on office walls. They guide us to work towards the best outcomes for all stakeholders in a transparent way built on trust and to seek continuous improvement through ongoing skilling and feedback. As our industry rapidly evolves, our culture continues to fuel our business.

What makes Kyndryl an employer of choice?

Maryjo: I’m incredibly proud of our global recognition as an employer of choice — and the more than 100 honors we’ve received in four short years. We’re certified as a Great Place to Work® in 10 countries, recognized as a global Most Loved Workplace® for three years running, and featured on Fortune’s Best Workplaces in New York, where our headquarters is based. These awards are meaningful, but what matters even more is living up to the standards they represent every day. And while we’re thrilled to receive these recognitions, our priority is to support our people to grow, thrive and live The Kyndryl Way every day so they can be the heart of progress for our customers.

As Kyndryl continues to grow, we’ve launched initiatives like our AI Innovation Lab in Liverpool, which is creating hundreds of new roles in software engineering and AI. Our new ASEAN Innovation Lab in Singapore will bring new AI professionals into the firm to help accelerate AI adoption and accelerate growth across Southeast Asia, and we’ve recently announced a $2.25 billion investment in India over the next three years to expand in that market, advance AI initiatives and foster the next generation of AI talent.

These efforts mirror our internal initiatives to upskill and expand the capabilities of our workforce through continual learning, enabling our people to keep delivering exceptional service to customers and find their next role at Kyndryl. In fact, Kyndryls completed approximately 2.3 million hours of training over the past year.

At the same time, we encourage Kyndryls to form strong bonds with each other and in our communities. Our Kyndryl Inclusion Networks (KINs) are open to all employees, and we encourage volunteering and community engagement —  including paid time off to support these efforts. Ultimately, we want The Kyndryl Way to resonate throughout our organization, our communities, and with future Kyndryls as they pursue rewarding, energizing, and meaningful careers.

How are you approaching AI?

Maryjo: Helping people feel confident working with AI — and equipping them with the right tools — is the most urgent skilling challenge today. According to the 2025 Kyndryl Readiness Report, 87% of surveyed organizations agree that AI will significantly reshape roles and responsibilities over the next 12 months.

At Kyndryl, we’re facing this head on by taking a holistic approach through our AIR framework: Anticipate, Integrate, Reskill, and Redeploy. We collaborate with business leaders to anticipate how AI will reshape roles, integrate skills data through our AI-enabled Kyndryl Bridge platform, and reskill our people with purpose. And when it comes to using AI in our work, our AI education is tailored to the specific skills and roles of each Kyndryl, preparing us to win together and meet both current and future customer needs.
