After a digital health check the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz asked Kyndryl to extensively modernize its IT systems. The work will focus on the special requirements needed for critical infrastructure in the health sector and parallel implementation during ongoing operations.

MUNICH, Germany, October, 26,  2022 – University Medical Center Mainz and Kyndryl (NYSE: KD), the world’s largest IT infrastructure services provider, announced a new agreement under which the companies will partner to transform the Center’s digital infrastructure. Following a successful IT health check,  Kyndryl set a comprehensive road map to implement necessary changes of the Center’s IT operations. The University Medical Center Mainz is set to benefit from Kyndryl’s skill and expertise in running mission-critical IT systems.

Kyndryl partners with Mainz University Medical Center to modernize its IT infrastructure to better adapt to the needs of those who rely on its services, such as doctors, nursing staff, IT personnel, researchers, and students. The transformation will mainly cover the following aspects:

  • Introducing an optimized approach to managing IT services

  • Improving multi-project management in the IT sector

  • Redefining how IT is currently organized, including what people’s roles and responsibilities are.

With the IT project “IPSUM”, short for “IT infrastructure, Process and Service Optimization at the University Medical Center in Mainz,” the two organizations show how they can drive digitization in a large health care facility in a speedy, safe, and sustainable way.

To determine the initial status quo at the University Medical Center, Kyndryl first examined its customer’s IT systems thoroughly, made specific recommendations based on the health check´s results and drew up a comprehensive road map aimed at transforming the Center’s IT operations. This plan of action also takes the legal requirements into account that critical infrastructures have to meet.

Mainz University Medical Center provides medical care to more than 350,000 patients each year. The digital infrastructure simply has to work in a mission critical system of this kind, even while a major overhaul of the infrastructure processes is taking place. To provide healthcare to patients across the campus in a reliable way is always the overriding goal for both partners.

Thanks to Kyndryl’s expertise in managing IT services, the new IT system will be set up parallel to ongoing operations using modern infrastructure, processes, and services. Kyndryl is going to support the Center’s IT team during the implementation by helping them process help-desk tickets and operating and servicing the old systems.

In addition, Kyndryl plans to continually train its employees to operate and use the new technology supporting the Center. Also, Kyndryl security and resiliency experts are involved with the project and will help ensure that the continuity of the Center’s IT systems is consistently maintained. This combination of measures will reduce the workload facing the IT team at University Medical Center Mainz.

"The road map for transforming our IT is really helpful to us,” says Dr. Christian Elsner, Commercial Director of the University Medical Center Mainz. “Kyndryl’s recommendations are clearly structured and transparent. Their experts also help us with the concrete implementation on a daily basis, so we can gradually modernize our critical IT infrastructure.”

Mainz University Medical Center has embarked on this important project with support from the consulting and advisory expertise of Kyndryl Consult, which is providing deep mission critical technology integration services to help the Center navigate its complex technology and IT infrastructure transformation.

Benedikt Ernst, Head of Cloud Advisory, Kyndryl Germany, says: “In the IPSUM project, we’re transforming the IT systems of an organization, that combines more than 60 clinics, institutes, and departments. We’re pleased to be able to tackle the requirements expected of critical infrastructures together with the University Medical Center Mainz. In our partnership we push for changes in the health care sector, that are going to have a long-term effect.”
