Neurodivergence and innovation: new paths to customer value

People power Kyndryl’s success. Customers come to Kyndryl for the people who can connect the dots between complex concepts and workable reality. Our people bring insights and perspectives, innovation and vision, and skills and expertise that differentiate us as co-creators and problem solvers for governments and industry.

Neurodivergent Kyndryls contribute to a unique set of problem-solving approaches that are essential to helping customers recognize patterns and develop ways to navigate them.

As we observe Neurodiversity Celebration Month, Brian Medeiros, President of Kyndryl Canada and Executive Sponsor of the TrueAbility Kyndryl Inclusion Network (KIN), which is a business resource group open to all Kyndryls, shares his perspective on why people with a broad range of cognitive styles and abilities are crucial to the success of our customers and our firm.

What advantages do neurodivergent people bring to Kyndryl?

Brian Medeiros: I serve on the board of Dyslexia Canada and I can tell you — some people with dyslexia often demonstrate strength in big-picture reasoning, spatial awareness and problem-solving, with an ability to see connections that might otherwise be overlooked.

Not everyone approaches problems in the same linear way. For example, with ADHD, my thinking is fast, jumps around and feels unconventional. I regularly move between ideas or make connections that aren’t immediately obvious. This can support different ideas or solutions that, with the right support and alignment, can lead to innovative customer solutions.

How does Kyndryl support the abilities of neurodivergent employees to help them build confidence and unlock their potential?

Brian Medeiros: It starts with what we’re doing today with the TrueAbility KIN. The work we are doing allows us to evolve in how we support neurodivergent Kyndryls, with a focus on creating a work environment where all thinking styles are understood, supported and can succeed.

Flexibility and clarity are the two words I need to hear. Some days I can knock work out of the park and other days I hit a metaphorical wall. This can appear chaotic to those on the receiving end. My ability to focus on lots of things simultaneously creates a double-edged sword. This is where clarity is needed, as I excel when given clear communication on expectations.

How can neurodivergent perspectives help organizations to maximize positive returns from their investments in AI?

Brian Medeiros: As organizations work to unlock ROI from AI and prepare for emerging technologies like quantum computing, the challenge is increasingly about how we think — not just what we build.

Neurodivergent perspectives can play a critical role here in several distinctive ways:

  • Big-picture and conceptual thinking can help identify where AI can create meaningful business value, rather than just technical capability;
  • Recognizing patterns makes it easier to spot trends, issues and potential gaps; and
  • Approaching problems differently can lead to new and better ways of doing things.

People with strong capabilities in these areas help Kyndryl develop the unique approaches to innovation that help us create value for our customers.
