Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the many cultures, experiences and perspectives across Asia and the Pacific Islands that shape our communities and workplaces. Kyndryls across the company are drawing on their backgrounds and experiences to drive innovation, strengthen collaboration and create meaningful customer impact.
For Karen Cheng, AAPI Heritage Month is deeply personal. “It’s a chance for me to pause and think about my family’s journey to Canada,” she says. Her parents immigrated from Hong Kong and, like many immigrants, had to constantly adapt — finding creative ways to overcome obstacles while holding on to their culture and learning how to thrive in a new country. “Their courage and resilience — without the benefit of any safety nets — was a huge inspiration for me,” Karen reflects.
Today, as Chief Technology Officer and Distinguished Engineer at Kyndryl Canada, Karen sees a clear link between that upbringing and how she approaches innovation. “A lot of immigrants are innovators by necessity,” she explains. “They’re the original frugal engineers — making the most of limited resources and figuring things out as they go.” That mindset shows up in her own approach to problem‑solving. “People often think innovation has to be something completely new,” she says. “But I’m a big believer in mashups — combining people, technology and ideas in smart, sometimes unexpected ways.”
For Karen, AAPI Heritage Month is not just about honoring the past — it’s also a moment to acknowledge how those lived experiences continue to shape how we think, lead and innovate today.
Critical to business transformation is collaboration. That’s why Kyndryl Global Alliances Marketing Senior Associate Celina Lau focuses on breaking down silos and bringing teams together across functions and geographies. “I approach innovation by working across teams as a connected community rather than in silos,” she explains. Based in the U.S. and early in her Kyndryl career, Celina focuses on coordinating marketing and field teams to improve how Kyndryl plans and structures its alliance narratives. By collaborating early in each campaign, Celina helps teams move faster and stay focused on outcomes. “That sense of ‘building together’ not only improves results, but also strengthens relationships and trust across teams,” she says.
AAPI Heritage Month is both a reflection on the past and a commitment to the future, says Celina. “It’s a time to reflect on the stories, sacrifices and resilience that made my own journey possible,” she continues, “and a reminder that inclusion shows up in many ways — not just in who is visible, but in whose voices are heard every day.” A core belief in collective progress has shaped Celina’s perspective on the importance of teamwork. “I grew up learning that progress is rarely individual — it happens when people look out for one another and move forward together,” she says. “And at Kyndryl, I see that philosophy reflected in a culture where collaboration and support drive success.”
As a Senior Brand Marketing Associate with Kyndryl Japan, Helena Roux-Dessarps brings another unique perspective on customer service to Kyndryl. Helena began her career in hospitality, where “everything revolves around the customer experience, anticipating needs and making things as seamless as possible,” she says. “It’s a mindset that I’ve carried into my work in tech.” Helena’s people-first approach to innovation has helped her develop solutions that are effective, intuitive and practical for end users.
For Helena, celebrating AAPI Heritage Month signals an opportunity to reflect on the importance of perspective and inclusion. “It’s about appreciating those differences and learning from them,” she says.
“It’s a reminder to be more aware, more open and to make sure people feel understood and included.” Drawing upon her multicultural background and experience living and working in Japan, Helena says that “one simple way that colleagues can foster belonging year-round is just by being open and curious about each other. Those kinds of conversations help people feel more understood, and over time that’s what really creates a sense of belonging.”
Together, these stories reflect how different backgrounds help Kyndryl build stronger teams, deepen customer relationships and foster innovation. From Karen Cheng’s “creative mash-ups” to Celina Lau’s focus on collaboration to Helena Roux-Dessarps’s channeling her people-first mindset into a human-centered design approach, these Kyndryls have capitalized on the firm’s supportive and encouraging environment to create new solutions, new ways of working, and unique approaches to delivering value to Kyndryl’s customers.
