As customers work to build the foundations for AI at scale, Kyndryl and AWS continue to advance modernization opportunities through consult-led services, cloud-native engineering and AI-driven automation.
Kyndryl recently expanded our alliance with AWS to help enterprises adopt and scale agentic AI as they modernize and run mission-critical workloads in the cloud. Kyndryl is now an Anthropic Authorized Reseller for Amazon Bedrock, and as organizations work to scale AI, Kyndryl and AWS are co-developing agentic AI modernization blueprints to help put AI into production. Kyndryl also recently earned three new AWS Competencies (Mainframe Modernization, AI and Digital Sovereignty).
More than 300 customers have partnered with Kyndryl to accelerate their journey to AWS. That’s across a range of projects: large-scale migrations, strengthening security operations and modernizing complex mission-critical applications.
As part of these engagements, Kyndryl contributes design, migration and managed services expertise to deliver integrated cloud solutions aligned to customer outcomes.
Here, Pankaj Kumar, Vice President, Global AWS Alliance at Kyndryl, discusses why modernizing for AI is so important, and what customers are doing right.
We’re in the middle of widespread AI adoption, and the focus has been on proving value from those investments. What are you hearing from customers about how they’re navigating the adoption of AI and the need to modernize their core systems?
Pankaj Kumar: It’s interesting that the AI boom is exposing unfinished modernization. Enterprises are seeing increased urgency to modernize their legacy environments, adopt cloud-native services and strengthen operational resilience as demands on their technology continue to grow. We’re seeing AI very much as an accelerant of a broad range of goals, including cloud modernization, AI innovation, mainframe transformation, SAP optimization and cyber resilience.
Moving to the cloud is still important for our customers as they adopt new technologies that make their organization more agile. Cloud helps them do this at scale. The harder part is usually not the technology itself, but the complexity of running legacy systems, cloud platforms, data environments and new AI initiatives all at the same time. Customers want to keep moving forward without adding risk.
What do organizations need from modernization partners today that they didn't need a few years ago? And what’s available today that wasn’t a few years ago?
Kumar: Just a few years ago, many of our joint engagements with AWS centered on cloud migration. Today, that’s still important. Now, also layer in AI initiatives, emerging regulatory requirements and cyber risks from frontier AI. They need partners who can connect those pieces rather than solve them independently. And they need solutions that don’t disrupt their businesses.
The value comes from bringing the right capabilities together around each customer's priorities and operating reality. Kyndryl brings deep experience managing and modernizing mission-critical systems; AWS brings cloud scale and a broad set of capabilities. Together, we help customers turn strategy into results, including modernizing mainframes, migrating workloads, enhancing resilience and preparing for AI.
What has also changed is the level of collaboration available through the alliance ecosystem. Today, customers can benefit from models where partners contribute jointly developed solutions, engineering and other resources to help accelerate modernization.
Are Kyndryl and AWS’s customers looking at infrastructure modernization differently now that AI is changing their requirements for scalability, performance and agility?
Kumar: Yes, we’re seeing customers view infrastructure modernization as a business and AI readiness initiative, not just a technology upgrade.
Consider our work with Grupo Alpina in Colombia. As part of its transformation strategy, Alpina is modernizing its SAP landscape through a migration to SAP Cloud ERP Private on AWS. The objective goes beyond infrastructure modernization. Alpina wanted to simplify and modernize its SAP architecture, reduce technology risk, strengthen resilience, integrate critical end-to-end business processes and enable a value chain powered by automation and AI. Working with Alpina, SAP and AWS, we aligned a strategy that addressed Alpina’s key concerns around risk, budget and timeline while creating a scalable foundation for future growth.
Kyndryl and AWS | Helping businesses build progress with cloud
Can you share an example where modernizing a core or mainframe environment helped remove a barrier to broader digital or AI initiatives?
Kumar: Absolutely. One strong example is Alpitour World in Italy, where modernizing its mainframe environment became a critical enabler of broader digital transformation and future AI initiatives.
Alpitour worked with Kyndryl and AWS to redevelop its core mainframe applications as cloud-native and migrate them to AWS. Modernizing those workloads allowed Alpitour to create a more flexible and efficient technology foundation while maintaining operational continuity with zero business disruption. The results included a 25-30% reduction in costs and AI-powered automation that improved sales efficiency.
That type of transformation is increasingly what we’re seeing across industries: modernizing core systems removes the constraints of legacy environments and creates the conditions needed to accelerate digital transformation and unlock AI opportunities.
How does the Ambassador program help customers?
Kumar: Kyndryl has eight AWS Ambassadors who are recognized leaders in the AWS Partner community. Our AWS ambassadors combine deep AWS expertise with hands-on experiences helping customers achieve business outcomes in the cloud.
They help customers by bringing the latest AWS best practices and innovations into customer engagements. Because they are closely connected to both AWS and the broader partner ecosystem, they can help customers accelerate cloud adoption, modernize applications, strengthen cloud proficiency and identify new opportunities to create value from AWS investments.
What do you see changing about how executives perceive challenges in the year ahead?
Kumar: I expect a more practical approach to modernization as it becomes less of a “one-time special project” and more of an ongoing discipline. The result of this ongoing approach means reducing complexity, improving resilience and creating measurable value from cloud and AI investments. For instance, our recent modernization of Sfakianakis Group's ERP environment on AWS in Greece was recently recognized for improving efficiency and security. It’s a good example of what customers want now: operate better, adapt faster and build environments that support what comes next. That's where Kyndryl and AWS will keep focusing.
