Enabling business growth with network automation for data-center modernization

iWay I Technology, Media & Telecommunications

Business opportunity

iWay is one of Switzerland's leading internet, TV, mobile, telephony and cloud hosting providers, and its customers expect services to run flawlessly, 24/7.

To meet these expectations, iWay depends on the reliability and performance of its data-center infrastructure, which powers the company's own internal and customer-facing services and hosts customers' systems.

As Swiss society becomes ever more digital, demand for sovereign IT hosting services backed by strong security continues to increase. To capitalize on this market opportunity, iWay wanted to modernize its data center infrastructure and ensure it could scale to meet customer needs over an expected five-year growth trajectory.

Technical challenge

Over the years, as iWay's business expanded and diversified, its data-center network fabric became increasingly complex. Only a few members of the IT team were fully confident they could make the architecture and configuration changes needed to support continued business growth. Day-to-day management of the fabric involved time-consuming manual tasks, which limited agility and increased the risk of error.

As demand for data-center capacity from customers grew, the IT team knew that they would need to scale the network. The complexity of the existing fabric was becoming a growth blocker.

Our solution

Together, iWay, Kyndryl and Nokia designed and executed a low-risk strategy to modernize the data-center network fabric, deploying new Nokia 7220 Interconnect Routers. These routers run the best-in-class Nokia SR Linux network operating system, managed by Nokia's Event-Driven Automation (EDA) platform.

The new routers deliver the high-capacity, low-latency performance needed to support demanding data-center workloads, while creating a scalable, resilient and future-ready network fabric.

With EDA, Kyndryl and Nokia introduced an event-driven operating model that simplifies iWay's network operations. The network can now automatically detect events, validate intent and execute corrective actions in real time, reducing manual intervention and minimizing operational risk.
