For Mike Romanowich, a Principal at Kyndryl, going the extra mile drives innovation and leads to scalable solutions

As a key member of the Core Enterprise and zCloud team at Kyndryl Canada, Mike Romanowich has been instrumental in advancing the company’s mainframe modernization efforts.

Years of showing up consistently, solving problems and delivering results have taught him a powerful truth: innovation isn’t just about technology — it’s about the drive to make a real and lasting difference. Whether he’s tackling complex systems or mentoring rising talent at work, Romanowich believes that if you lead with purpose, positive outcomes will follow.

“The values of being resourceful and making a real impact were instilled in me early,” said Romanowich, Principal Architect. “As an innovator, I carry those same beliefs forward to create solutions for customers that are scalable and sustainable.”

Here, he shares the values that have helped him rise to Principal — and continue to fuel his journey forward.

What is the meaning of innovation?

Innovation is about understanding the real problem first, then designing a solution that works today and continues to deliver value over time.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

There have been many, but being recognized as a Principal Architect is the most special — it is a meaningful validation of my learning, listening and hard work. It has been equally rewarding to see people I have mentored go on to succeed in their roles.

What business issue are you addressing?

My next big work-related challenge is to expand zCloud by adding smarter features and functions using aggregation, automation and AI-based technologies. Our goal is to deliver modern, scalable solutions that help enterprises get the most out of their core systems while embracing hybrid cloud approaches.

Abstract technology big data background concept. Motion of digital data flow. Transferring of big data. Transfer and storage of data sets , block chain, server, hi-speed internet.

The values of being resourceful and making a real impact were instilled in me early. As an innovator, I carry those same beliefs forward to create solutions for customers that are scalable and sustainable.

How have you found a sense of belonging at Kyndryl?

The people make all the difference. I’m surrounded by colleagues who genuinely want me to succeed — they invest time, share knowledge and celebrate each other’s growth. That sense of community is what makes Kyndryl special.

What is your best piece of advice?

Early in my career, a manager asked me, “What can you do for me next?” That question stuck with me as a reminder to challenge myself to assume there’s always room to contribute more. This mindset has been instrumental in shaping how I approach every role in my personal and professional life.
