Mayr-Melnhof Group (MM Group), a leading global producer of cartonboard and folding cartons, has seen demand for its innovative, recyclable packaging products consistently grow.

To meet much of that demand, the company — which has 72 production sites in 27 countries — has spent the last two years transforming its business operations by focusing on organic growth and value enhancing acquisitions, with an emphasis on improved productivity and sustainability.

Naturally, each acquisition means that the IT infrastructure of the newly acquired company has to be integrated into the existing IT environment in a fast, secure and smooth way. Even more challenging, every remote production site requires real-time, secure remote or mobile access to MM Group’s assets and processes.

The company knew that to advance its growth strategy and continue its successful transformation, it needed to transform the way it delivers IT. That’s when MM Group began searching for a reliable and trusted partner that could help address the challenges.

“The RfP process was led by MM Group in a professional and highly competitive manner,” said Herwig Feichtinger, Solution Sales at Kyndryl. “Communication with MM Group's staff was on a cooperative, eye-to-eye level throughout the process and afterwards during transition.”

IT Migration in Action
MM Group tapped Kyndryl to run MM Group’s IT infrastructure by shifting its IT production approach from in-house to managed services and migrated its datacenter workload to Kyndryl’s high available data centers in Austria. The migration was completed in eight months — with actual migration and knowledge transfer happening simultaneously. In addition, as MM Group’s infrastructure business is critical the migration had to be without any disruption to MM Group’s business operations, production processes and resource planning.

“Taking over the client´s services in a dynamically changing environment was a challenge, which we accepted and successfully accomplished,” said Manfred Strych, Delivery Partner Executive for Kyndryl. “While still transforming the environment, additional scope came along the way such as strategic acquisitions of MM Group in Kotka and Kwidzyn and was integrated in a joint team effort. Setting the right goals and priorities was key for success.”

Now MM Group can quickly and efficiently introduce new packaging solutions and enable completely remote and mobile relationships with its clients and partners.

“Nothing is as powerful as working together as a joint team on the realization of an idea,” said Klaus Greimel, Sales Partner at Kyndryl, “and to see that idea coming to life successfully.”
