Kyndryl modernizes MEYER WERFT’s PLM system to power high-performance, sustainable digital shipbuilding

A large industrial shipyard stands beside a still body of water at dusk, with tall blue cranes dominating the skyline. The calm surface of the water creates a clear reflection of the cranes and buildings, enhancing the symmetry of the scene. Soft blue tones in the sky and water contrast with the warm lights from the shipyard structures. The text "JOSL MEYER PAPENBURG" is visible on a prominent building in the background.
Resilient, energy-efficient infrastructure strengthens engineering collaboration and accelerates holistic cruise ship design

FRANKFURT and PAPENBURG, Germany, September 2, 2026 — Kyndryl (NYSE: KD), a leading provider of mission-critical enterprise technology services, today announced it has partnered with MEYER WERFT, one of the world’s leading cruise shipbuilders, to modernize its Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system into a high-performance, resilient digital backbone for next-generation shipbuilding.

“We are very satisfied with our collaboration with Kyndryl, whose experts provided us with end-to-end services throughout our digital transformation and the modernization of our PLM software,” said Sven Galenski, Head of Group IT Infrastructure Services, MEYER WERFT. “The new infrastructure has created a scalable and future-proof digital engineering foundation that strengthens our innovation capabilities, supports our sustainability strategy and prepares us for the future.”

“This project demonstrates how a resilient, high-performance infrastructure can accelerate digital transformation in highly complex industrial environments,” said Frank van der Sant, Country President, Kyndryl Germany. “By combining our deep industry expertise with our modernization and managed services, we transformed and now operate MEYER WERFT’s PLM system with optimal performance, security and energy efficiency — demonstrating Kyndryl’s ability to reliably design, deliver and operate mission-critical environments in complex industrial settings.”

In an industry characterized by sophisticated 3D engineering, long development cycles and rising sustainability expectations, a stable and scalable IT infrastructure is a decisive competitive factor. MEYER WERFT’s centralized PLM environment is critical to enabling real-time collaboration across multidisciplinary engineering teams and external partners working on complex, advanced 3D cruise ship designs.

Working closely with MEYER WERFT, Kyndryl designed and implemented a tailored infrastructure solution deployed across two on-site data centers. Since implementation, Kyndryl has operated the platform end-to-end, delivering consistently high levels of performance, availability and security over the past two years to meet the demanding operational requirements of large-scale digital shipbuilding.

The modernized PLM system increases computing capacity and system responsiveness and stability, enabling engineers to process complex 3D models and large simulation datasets efficiently.

Sustainability was a core design principle of the new infrastructure. Energy-efficient hardware architectures, optimized workload distribution, and modern data center technologies are designed to improve energy efficiency and optimize resource use in IT operations.
