What we are doing

We have developed our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions baseline in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) standards. Our first Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report will be released in 2023 and will include details on our emissions calculation, results, and third party validations. Read more about our net zero targets and how we will reduce our emissions.

We have continued to make progress on our four strategic priorities in 2021 and 2022:

1. To address climate change risk and environmental operational efficiency, we:

  • Enable generation of 18,000 MWh of solar energy annually and will use more than 50% renewable energy in 2022; we have committed to achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030.
  • Reduced our data center energy consumption by 32,800 MWh (emission reduction of ~10,676 MTCO2e) through over 250 energy efficiency projects.
  • Are developing our water, waste, and biodiversity goals aligned with SASB and GRI.

2. To manage system performance and regulatory compliance, we:

  • Are building our Environmental and Energy Management System and will obtain ISO 14001, 14064, and 50001 certifications.
  • Will disclose our ESG progress using frameworks such as CDP, TCFD, SASB, and GRI.
  • Continue to monitor and meet material compliance with all applicable government requirements.

3. To be an employer of choice and preferred customer service provider, we:

  • Are developing sustainability training and internal volunteering programs to build employee engagement.

4. To drive market differentiation, leveraging business practices with partners, we:

  • Launched the Green Guild, a customer-facing program that brings Kyndryls together to develop sustainable business solutions, leveraging Kyndryl Vital and Kyndryl Consult.
  • Work with our customers to develop specialized business solutions – including cloud migration, digital transformation, AI, security, and networking – all of which can address ESG needs.

Our partners

One Tree Planted

Kyndryl is a proud supporter of One Tree Planted, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to make it easy for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Reforestation helps to rebuild forests after fires and floods, provide jobs for social impact, and restore biodiversity. Together, Kyndryl and One Tree Planted have planted over 90,000 trees through a combination of global reforestation and biodiversification projects and employee planting events that engage our teams in our sustainability efforts.

Carbon Literacy Trust

Kyndryl is working with the Carbon Literacy Trust to help Kyndryl employees train and become certified as Carbon Literate. The Carbon Literacy Trust developed the Carbon Literacy Project to help raise individuals’ and organizations’ awareness of the impact of human activity on the climate and the consequences of climate change. Carbon Literacy gives people the capacity and knowledge to make a positive change to how society responds to carbon emissions and climate change. For each class of learners, Kyndryl is offering a limited number of spots to non-profit organizations and students, who are nominated through our partners.

Kyndryl UKI and USA have been awarded bronze Carbon Literate Organization status by the Carbon Literacy Trust for Kyndryl's creation of bespoke Carbon Literacy education programs and leadership participation.

Responsible Business Alliance

Kyndryl is committed to high standards of corporate responsibility and sustainability throughout our operations and supply chain. Kyndryl is a member of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) which has its own code of conduct reflecting social, environmental and ethical industry standards.

In partnership with RBA, we ask that all our suppliers adhere to RBA's Code of conduct.

Oceanário de Lisboa

Kyndryl is working with Oceanário de Lisboa to help employees become certified as part of their “Seastainability” program. This program was developed to help raise individuals’ and organizations’ awareness of the role of the ocean in balancing the planet's climate. It promotes behavioral change by giving people the opportunity to develop their knowledge of the impact of climate change, how the ocean regulates and influences the climate, and the impact of plastic on oceans and marine life.

Kyndryl's investment in this training also enables Oceanário de Lisboa to provide conservation actions and ocean literacy sessions for schools.
